Long Beach is known for one of the largest and finest Memorial Day parades in all of New York. The pride of our community is also some of the finest around and the streets are filled with our neighbors who show their support and thanks to those who volunteer their services and in some cases regrettably their lives to keep us all safe. Marching from the West End to City Hall are many community service providers, organizations, schools and our public service and safety providers.

For the Long Beach Auxiliary Police, this is one of our largest events. We not only assist in traffic and crowd control, but march and ride in the parade as well.

Muster for the parade TBA. Please note your availability on the Duty Board!

Memorial Day is also when the Auxiliary Police, in full dress uniform have their annual picture taken on the steps of the Long Beach Police Department.

S.T.O.P. is coming to Long Beach on Sunday April 22 at the City Hall Parking Lot.

The Stop Throwing Out Pollutants (S.T.O.P.) Program is designed to provide area residents with a safe, environmentally sound method of disposal of the many hazardous materials found in the average home. By bringing such toxins as antifreeze, drain cleaners and pesticides on any of the scheduled S.T.O.P. collection days, you and your family can make a significant contribution to the protection of our precious groundwater supply and the preservation of our bays and estuaries. Please join with us in cleaning our homes of hazardous material and ensuring their proper collection and disposal. Together we can ensure the continued integrity of our fragile ecosystem.

When bringing items, please follow these simple guidelines: Wrap leaking containers in newspaper and place in a plastic bag or larger container. Make sure all caps and lids are tight. Place items securely in a box for transportation. Use newspaper or cardboard to keep items from tipping or hitting each other. Place chemicals which may react with each other in separate areas of the vehicle. Do not leave products in a hot, unventilated vehicle for an extended period of time. Do not smoke near chemical products. Wear rubber gloves when handling containers.

Waste from commercial establishments, schools, churches, synagogues or home businesses will not be accepted. No commercial vehicles are permitted. Please note that electronic recycling items will only be collected at E-Cycle events.

To learn about what items are accepted and not accepted, please go to the Town of Hempstead website at: http://toh.li/sanitation-department/stop-throwing-out-pollutants

Our proud Little Leaguers, their family and supporters will march through the streets of Long Beach just in time for a fun and busy playing season. The participants will march from Lindell School. It is a fun event in which our local kids get to have the City stop the traffic to recognize them and show them our support. As this is a parade, it requires the monitoring and closing of many intersections throughout the event. It is important that we have a strong showing of officers to assist with such an event.

After a slow special-event season, this event will serve as a good refresher for most officers and a valuable training for those who recently got into uniform.

Muster is at 9:30 AM at Long Beach Police Department Headquarters.

The Parade will start at the Lindell School. It will head South on Lindell Boulevard and then East onto Park Avenue. At National Boulevard it will turn North and conclude at the Recreation Center Ballfield.

LONG BEACH POLAR BEAR CLUB Super Bowl Sunday Splash is an annual event that started in 1998. All proceeds go to the Make-A-Wish Foundation. Since its inception, the Long Beach Polar Bears and their many supporters have been able to grant many wishes.

This year the event will be held on Super Bowl Sunday February 5, 2012 and will officially take place at Riverside Boulevard at 1:00 PM. Participants are asked to arrive by 12:30 PM.

To say that the growth and notoriety of the Long Beach Polar Bears has been amazing is definitely understated. In 2001 they were able to raise $12,000 and grant two wishes. This doubled the next year and has continued to grow exponentially since. In 2008, with an incredibly huge turnout, the Long Beach Polar Bears raised $270,000 and granted 35 wishes. In 2009 The Long Beach Polar Bears broke a Guinness World Record. Officials from Guinness were on hand to asses the number of folks that turned out for this important event.

To learn more about the Polar Bears, to register for future Super Bowl Splashes, to buy apparel or to make a direct donation to the Make-A-Wish foundation, visit: http://www.longbeachpolarbears.org/

Not only do many participants show up, but many many onlookers and cheering supporters show up as well. It is amazing to see many thousands of people convening on the beach on a winter morning.

This is always a major event for the Long Beach Auxiliary Police. Given the many thousands of people that show up, we are counted upon to provide necessary traffic and pedestrian control and well as directing vehicle parking. There will be many pedestrians and vehicles on the road. Traffic is expected to jam quickly as thousands of participants and supporters head to Broadway and Riverside Boulevard. After the event, the traffic conditions will continued, but in reverse as participants and onlooker leave the beach and boardwalk.

This is an ALL HANDS event. Given the relatively slow season for special event training, uniformed and especially probationary officers are always urged to get and maintain necessary training by participating in the somewhat rare winter season events. Muster will be at 10:30 Am at Auxiliary PD HQ.

The 1 mile race will start at 8:30 AM and the adult race will follow.

Given the size of Long Beach relative to the 10K distance that is covered, a lot of intersections including Park Avenue, Beech Street and Broadway require traffic control to protect the runners. In total, almost fifty intersections are crossed by the runners. The race tends to spread out quite a bit and we rely on a lot of resources to handle the posts. Given the distance and the expanse of the runners, this event is an ALL HANDS event and every uniformed and probationary officer is urged to participate.

Muster at Regular Headquarters at 8:00 AM
