City of Long Beach Public Bicycle Auction – May 7, 2011

On May 7, 2011 the City held a very successful public bicycle auction.

Approximately 100 bicycles that were left around Long Beach and were never claimed went on auction. Viewing was from 9AM to 10AM and the auction immediately followed.  The weather was great and so was the turn out!

Nassau County Legislator Denise Ford was on hand to distribute free bicycle helmets!

The Long Beach Auxiliary Police assisted the Long Beach Police Department in setting up all of the bicycles and making sure that the event went smoothly and safely.

Little League Parade – April 9, 2011

Our proud Little Leaguers, their family and supporters will march through the streets of Long Beach just in time for a fun and busy playing season.  The participants will march along Park Avenue to the Lindell School.  It is a fun event in which our local kids get to have the City stop the traffic to recognize them and show them our support.  As this is a parade, it requires the monitoring and closing of many intersections throughout the event.  It is important that we have a strong showing of officers to assist with such an event.  After a slow special-event season, this event will serve as a good refresher for most officers and a valuable training for those who recently got into uniform.

Muster will be at 9AM at Long Beach Police Department Headquarters.

The Parade will start at the Lindell School. It will head South on Lindell Boulevard and then East onto Park Avenue. At National Boulevard it will turn North and conclude at the Recreation Center Ballfield.

Turkey Trot 10K Run – November 21, 2010

turkey-trotA Long Beach tradition, the Turkey Trot is the last run of the fall season.  Starting out on the the boardwalk, the Turkey Trot is actually two races in one.  The first race is a one mile shortened version for kids.  It is followed by the 10k run for adults.  Winners will go home with Thanksgiving turkeys!

The 1 mile race will start at 8:30 AM and the adult race will follow.

Given the size of Long Beach relative to the 10K distance that is covered, a lot of intersections including Park Avenue, Beech Street and Broadway require traffic control to protect the runners. In total, almost fifty intersections are crossed by the runners. The race tends to spread out quite a bit and we rely on a lot of resources to handle the posts. Given the distance and the expanse of the runners, this event is an ALL HANDS event and every uniformed and probationary officer is urged to participate.

14th Annual Long Beach Fall Festival October 9 and 10, 2010

autumn_leavesThe Fall Festival will take place on Saturday and Sunday, October 9 and 10 from 10AM to 4PM at Kennedy Plaza on Park Avenue and National Boulevard.

Long Beach Auxiliary Police will be operating a booth offering hot dogs and beverages.  It will be operated through the volunteer efforts of members of the unit, family and friends.  The booth serves as an important fundraiser for the Auxiliary Police and provides yet another great opportunity to interact with each other and the community while promoting awareness of the department’s functions.

IRISH DAY PARADE & FESTIVAL – – October 2, 2010

four_leaf_cloverThe annual Ancient Order of Hibernians Irish Day and Parade began  at Washington Boulevard at 12:00 noon and proceeded all the way down to the West End where the street fair was held.  There was fun for the entire family with rides and delicious food.  There were many tables selling handmade, eclectic, Irish and one-of-a-kind wares.

The entire length of Beech Street in the trendy West End from New York Boulevard to Connecticut Boulevard was closed for the huge and successful festival.
