Hurricane Irene to affect Long Beach

Hurricane Irene is currently projected to cross Long Island and is expected to bring flooding and powerful winds to our area.

If the hurricane continues on it’s present course, the city of Long Beach will be evacuated.

The City Manager has requested that residents plan for a voluntary evacuation of Long Beach at this time. Residents should contact friends or family or make alternative arrangements to stay north of Sunrise Highway. Areas south of Sunrise Highway are subject to coastal flooding and may not be safe to ride out the storm in.

As the storm approaches, do NOT call 911 except for life threatening emergencies!

This site will be updated as details come in.

Please check the official City of Long Beach website at LongBeachNY.org

You can use the City of Long Beach Hurricane Preparedness Guide to be fully prepared for the storm.

Historical Society Arts & Crafts Festival – August 20 & 21, 2011

Such a great event that Long Beach has two Arts & Crafts Fairs every summer!

Nearly three hundred vendors of eclectic crafts, art and food will line both sides of the Boardwalk centered at Riverside Boulevard. The Fair will be held from 9:00am to 6:00pm on both days. It is historically one of the most successful events on the boardwalk- not only for the community but also for the Long Beach Auxiliary Police.

The Long Beach Auxiliary Police will operate a booth selling the most competitively priced Sabrett’s Hot Dogs (with all of the fixings), the most poular brands of soda, large bottles of water and all the flavors of Gatorade. The booth will be operated by volunteers and supporters consisting of Auxiliary Police, family and friends. All of the proceeds will go to help support the operations of the Long Beach Auxiliary Police.

Please check the duty board for the time-grid for coverage!

For vendor details please contact the Long Beach Historical Society directly at 516-432-1192.

8th Annual C.U.R.B. Bike Ride – August 13, 2011

Citizens United to Remove Barriers (C.U.R.B.) is a local, non-profit organization that promotes the elimination of barriers that often stand in the way of physically challenged persons. Their volunteers have raised community awareness and have installed wheelchair ramps and lifts throughout the City.

This is not a race but a ride. It will begin at St. Ignatius Martyr Church on Grand Avenue and West Broadway and end at the Long Beach Rec Center where complimentary food and drinks will be served.

The bike ride will be approximately 12 miles in length and will entail a tour of Long Beach by bicycle.

This annual ride has been held in memory of the founder and former president of C.U.R.B., Jim Conlon, who passed away in 2004.

Questions about the event should be directed to Bike4Curb@gmail.com

The ride will begin at 9:30 AM. The Auxiliary Police will muster at 9:00 AM at Long Beach Police Headquarters. The unit will provide traffic control with cars and of course the bike patrol unit!
