Auxiliary Police beefs up patrols for the summer!

calendarDue to the increased summer activities and events through our great city, the Long Beach Auxiliary Police will commence Summer Saturday patrols on July 3, 2010.

The Friday night patrol will begin on that night and all the following Saturdays will be covered by the patrol nights in sequence.  Please make sure that you check the Summer Saturday Patrol schedule located in the Pages link in the upper left of this web page!  If you are not available for your scheduled patrol, please alert your night supervisor and see if you can help out on another Saturday night.

Long Beach Arts & Crafts Fair – July 17th & 18th, 2010

fairOver 200 craft and food vendors will be lining the boardwalk from Edwards Boulevard to Long Beach Boulevard. The Fair will be open 9am to 7pm on Saturday and 9am to 6pm on Sunday.

In addition to crafts and food, expect to find live entertainment, demonstrations, raffles, and much more.

The Arts and Crafts Fair is not only a fun event, but a major fundraiser for the Long Beach Auxiliary Police.

We will be setting up a booth and will be serving hot dogs and cold refreshments.

We will also be selling Long Beach Auxiliary Police Supporter T-shirts.

This is a great opportunity to socialize with other officers and get our families and friends involved!

St. Mary’s International Festival July 8-11, 2010

stmaryoftheisle_longbeach_photoThe annual St. Mary of the Isle International Festival will be held from Thursday evening through Sunday evening.  The Church is located at 315 East Walnut Street Long Beach, NY 11561.  This is a fun event with amusement park rides, carnival booths, games of luck, events and entertainment for the entire family and many delicious international delights to dine on.

This is a busy event which draws a very active crowd.  A police presence and our Auxiliary Police support keep things comfortable and safe.  We will need more than the usual patrol night’s coverage, so please consider your availability for these evenings.  Alert the night’s command if you can help out.

Long Beach Fireworks Extravaganza – July 9, 2010

fireworks1The fireworks will be centered on the beach between Long Beach Boulevard and Riverside Boulevard and will commence at 9:00 pm. It will include a New Orleans/Cajun Zydeco concert by T’Bazco Road Concert at 8:00 PM on the Long Beach Boulevard Beach.

Large crowds are expected.  The City is supplying free shuttle busses to ease traffic for residents from both the East and West Ends to Riverside Blvd between the hours of 7 and 11pm. Fireworks are dangerous and anyone found possessing or exploding fireworks will be subject to arrest. For shuttle routes and further information call 431-1000 Extension 7105 between the hours of 9am and 4pm.

SPECTATORS SHOULD STRONGLY CONSIDER WALKING, BIKING OR TAKING A SHUTTLE BUS TO THIS EVENT.  PARKING WILL BE QUITE LIMITED AND POST-EVENT TRAFFIC WILL BE EXTREMELY HEAVY AND SLOW-MOVING!

This will be a very busy and well-attended event.  Expect a lot of vehicular and pedestrian traffic.  We need a strong showing of Auxiliary Police to assist with traffic before and after the event.  Check the duty board for specific details!

Town of Hempstead Fireworks Traffic Detail – June 26, 2010

fireworksThe annual Town of Hempstead fireworks at Lido Beach will be held on Saturday, June 26th, 2010. Because the Loop Parkway is closed for the end of this major event, a massive amount of traffic will be passing through Long Beach as soon as the fireworks end.

All officers will be needed.  Please sign up on the Duty Board if available.

One of the busiest traffic events of the year, the Auxiliary Police assist in getting many thousands of cars from Point Lookout and Lido Beach through Long Beach and across the bridge in the middle of the night.  As in the past, the traffic signals were controlled to favor west bound traffic down Park Avenue.  Given the volume of cars and motorcycles (and some weary motorists), the Town of Hempstead Fireworks event really shows the value of our training and traffic assignments throughout the rest of the year.

The 6th Annual Sean Ryan Fun Run – June 26, 2010

runner9The 6th Annual Sean Ryan Memorial 5K Family Fun Run will take place on Saturday, June 26th at 8:30 a.m., beginning at the Riverside Blvd. and the Boardwalk.   It will also include a 1K Children’s Fun Run on the Boardwalk at 8:00 a.m.

The race is in honor of the late Long Beach Police Officer Sean Ryan.

For more information, call (516) 431-3890.

When the City sponsors a race in our narrow city that means that a lot of intersections will need to be monitored and shut down to protect the runners from vehicular traffic.  To insure runner safety and be prepared to meet the demands of widely-dispersed runners we require a strong showing of Auxiliary officers.  The bike patrol unit allows fast and mobile coverage on the boardwalk.
