Long Beach Polar Bear Splash - February 1, 2009

LONG BEACH POLAR BEAR CLUB Super Bowl Sunday Splash is an annual event that started in 1998.  All proceeds go to the Make-A-Wish Foundation.  Since its inception, the Long Beach Polar Bears and their many supporters have been able to grant many wishes.

This year the event was held on Super Bowl Sunday February 1, 2009.  The splash officially took place at Riverside Boulevard at 1:00 PM.

To say that the growth and notoriety of the Long Beach Polar Bears has been amazing is definitely understated.  In 2001 they were able to raise $12,000 and grant two wishes.  This doubled the next year and has continued to grow exponentially since.  In 2008, with an incredibly huge turnout, the Long Beach Polar Bears raised $270,000 and granted 35 wishes.

NEWSFLASH!!!

The Long Beach Polar Bears will be going for a Guinness World Record.  Officials from Guinness will be on hand to asses the number of folks turning out for this important event.  Check here for important updates!!!

Not only do many participants show up, but many many onlookers and cheering supporters show up as well.  It is amazing to see many thousands of people convening on the beach on a winter morning.

This is always a major event for the Long Beach Auxiliary Police.  Given the many thousands of people that show up, we are counted upon to provide necessary traffic and pedestrian control and well as directing vehicle parking.  This is an ALL HANDS event.  Given the relatively slow season for special event training, uniformed and especially probationary officers should make every effort to participate in the winter season events.

Snowflake Run - January 31, 2009

The City of Long Beach Recreation Department’s Annual Snowflake Run was held on January 31, 2009.

It was be a four mile run that started and ended at Lindell School (Lindell Boulevard and West Hudson Street).  The race began at 9:00 AM.  The Run participants had to register in advance.

The Snowflake Run is always a fun winter event.  It is good to see the community active in what is otherwise a very quiet and slow season.

The runners braved extremely cold temperatures.  It was 24 degrees with a strong relentless wind coming from the West.  Although it helped while heading East, the wind was a huge force to reckon with while running West and sometimes South.

Due to the many intersections that required traffic control to ensure runner safety, the Auxiliary Police had a strong showing of officers.  The extreme weather did not dissuade the LBAPD Bicycle Unit from participating.  In the end, the Snowflake Run went smoothly and without incident.

LBAPD GENERAL MEETING - January 25, 2009

Thank you for the strong turnout of both uniformed and probationary officers.

A lot of important information was conveyed and the upcoming events were discussed.

We had the honor of recognizing two of our officers whose diligent observations, textbook response and effective communication with the Long Beach Police Department regarding suspicious activities led to a successful arrest.  Both officers received Meritorious Conduct awards concurrently recommended by the officers of the Long Beach Police Department and the officers of the Long Beach Auxiliary Police.

Annual Martin Luther King Jr. March - January 19, 2009

The “March for a King” started at 12:30PM at Laurelton Boulevard and Park Avenue.  The march headed East on Park Avenue to Riverside Boulevard and then North to the MLK Center on Riverside Boulevard where there was a celebration honoring Dr. King.

Due to traffic control needs, the Auxiliary Police assisted with this event.  The LBAPD provided both traffic and pedestrian control assuring that the March was safely conducted.
