November Vehicle and Building Maintenance - Nov. 16th, 2008

carwashWe’ll be getting together to clean all of our vehicles and perform general maintenance on our headquarters building on Sunday, November 16th, 2008 at noon.

We generally have a good time making our cars and building shine.

We had a lively team who detailed all of the vehicles-  from Lieutenant to Sergeants, to Patrol Officers to even a 5 year old family member!  The team made for a quick and thorough event which was followed by an enjoyable Pizza lunch!

Weather allowing, we will continue to do vehicle detailing the third Sunday of each month at noon!

Halloween Evening Patrol - Friday October 31, 2008

This year’s Halloween falls out on a regular Friday patrol night, and it will undoubtably be a much busier than usual night in the City given the possible mild weather, Daylight Savings Time still in effect and no school the following day.

On one hand, this means more young kids than usual walking around even later and crossing the streets in the dark.  On the other hand, this could mean more pranks and unfortunate misdeeds.

The Auxiliary Police will have an enhanced patrol and additional officers and cars on the road to serve as the Eyes and Ears to the Long Beach Police Department and our community-at-large.  We hope that with a greater police presence that our children will be safer and property will be better protected.

We had a great showing of officers, which allowed us to get five marked vehicles on the road.  We were able to cover all posts and provide escorts as needed.

Some advice:         If your young children will be going Trick-or-Treating, please make sure that there is adult supervision.  It is easy for them to get distracted which can pose a danger crossing the street.  If they are wearing dark costumes, have them wear or carry disposable light sticks, bracelets or necklaces.  Clip-on flashing LED lights readily available at bicycle stores greatly aid in being visible.  If your children are older make sure that you know, trust and are comfortable with who they are trick-or-treating with.  Again, adult supervision isn’t such a bad idea either.

12th Annual Fall Festival - October 11 & 12, 2008

The Fall Festival will take place on Saturday and Sunday, October 11 and 12 from 10AM to 4PM at Kennedy Plaza on Park Avenue and National Boulevard.

It will be featuring entertainment, food, rides, craft vendors, a pumpkin patch and so much more.  There will be fun and interests for the entire family.

In addition to the pumpkin patch, the kids can enjoy their own costume parade, puppet shows, crafts, and a real carousel.  Hay wagon and fire engine rides will also be provided.

Adults will enjoy eating Autumn treats.  There will be a live performance by a Barbershop Quartet and several other musical acts.

Amazing weather for both days made for an amazing turnout of people who came to enjoy this year’s Fall Festival.  The LBAPD assisted with the Children’s Costume Parade, but the rest of the time we were busy manning a very active booth.  The turnout of officers and family was immense and despite the heavy business, the whole event was a piece of cake.  With Saturday not even over, we sold the entire lot of hot dogs that we purchased and expected to last the entire weekend, and then some! These fundraisers are important as they help to fund our budget for necessary supplies and other things that the generous City of Long Beach budget cannot always fully meet.  It is also important because it allows us to connect with the community in different ways and have the opportunity to interact with them while promoting our unit and even meeting potential recruits.  It is also nice to have a social event with other officers and their very supportive family and friends.
